What is the ‘Wholistic' part of wholistic health care?
The word ‘wholistic' gets thrown around a lot, along with other buzz words that help market the latest trends. But to truly understand what wholistic means, we need to look at three concepts.
1. Health is not just about physicality. We are so much more than physical bodies. In fact most wholistic health care practitioners acknowledge that we are made up of four bodies: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Discomfort in any of these bodies can and will cause discomfort in any of the other bodies. For example, bad news can produce an emotional reaction, which in turn can cause physical discomfort. This concept is even reflected in our language. Have you ever been ‘worried sick'?
2. For every action there is a reaction. Eat too much greasy pizza, and very soon you will not feel so well. Exercise regularly, and very soon you will have excess energy to devote to your day.
= AND =
3. You are NOT what you eat. HUH? Haven't we been told again and again that we are what we eat ... well that is only part of the story. You are the result of:
what you take in;
what you do with what you take in;
AND what you don't eliminate.
≠
Lets examine this third concept more closely.
What you take in. Food is the most obvious thing we take into our bodies. But we also take in the air we breath and we absorb what we put on our skin. But it doesn't stop there. What about the sights we see, the sounds we hear, the things we touch, and what we smell? In fact every experience we have at every moment is ‘taken in' and becomes something that needs to be ‘processed', which leads us to the next point.
What you do with what you take in. This is when the processing happens. The processing of food (digestion) is obvious and fairly easy for us to understand. Our various organs break down the food we eat and then using the broken down bits, go about the business of repairing, building, and storing. We also have to consider how we process sights, smells, sounds and everything we come in contact with. The processing of these can produce physical reactions such as laughter or less appealing reactions such as an upset stomach. Sights, smells, sounds and everything we come in contact with will get us thinking, which can result in strong emotions, pondering thoughts and creativity.
What you don't eliminate. The obvious elimination channels are urination and bowel movements. But don't forget we also eliminate through sweating and breathing, as well as through our emotions and our creative endeavours.
So, now that we have a better understanding of the word ‘wholistic', lets take a look at how it applies to health care. Wholistic health care understands that good health does not come from taking a certain supplement or eating a specific food or even from regular exercise. Good health is the result of the choices you make about everything: food, exercise, lifestyle, creative expression and even how we choose to think and interact with the world.
